normal position at the bottom of the screen - how do I

If you move the start bar to either side
or top of the screen, and wish to move it back - click
on a blue area next to 'Start', away from any icons. Click
the left mouse button down and keep it depressed. Move
the mouse to the position you want and you will see a
grey silhouette of where it is going to end up. When

| Question: |
What is the Internet?
|
| Answer: |
The internet started life as the 'Arpanet'
in 1969, a US department of defence network. Soon
universities, research labs and defence
contractors were joining. Sharing files, emails
and news. Originally
it was accessed with text only programs and so its user
base was small, but with the onset of the WWW protocol
in the 1990s leading to the web pages that we are familiar
with today, its subscriber base rapidly expanded and still
continues to grow today.

| Question: |
What do I need to connect to the Internet?
|
| Answer: |
The home user or office will need a computer,
(a lot of websites and mail programs are written for modern
computers, although older machines will connect to the
internet what they may be able to do may be limited).
You also need connectivity this can be achieved with a
modem and phone line, ISDN or a high speed broadband connection
such as DSL.
There are many ways that large companies connect to the
internet but this is not covered by this FAQ. You
will need some Internet software installed on your machines
but most computers sold today have this install already.

| Question: |
What is the difference between a modem,
ISDN and DSL?
|
| Answer: |
A modem converts your computers data
packets into an analogue signal (sounds a bit like a fax
machine) and uses the normal telephone network to pass
this to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) who then
turns the signal back into data and thus enabling your
computer to communicate on the Internet.
ISDN also uses the telephone network to transmit data
to the ISP but does not convert the data to analogue signals;
instead it uses digital equipment at the exchange and
on your computer.
DSL uses digital signals and your telephone line but at
the telephone exchange your line connects to different
equipment rather than the telephone network. This
removes the limitation on speed that was being caused
by the telephone equipment being used for data transfer
when it was designed for voice samples and also removes
the need for call charges from the telephone network.
This means that DSL can offer fast always on connections
at a cheap price.

| Question: |
Is it safe to buy on the Internet?
|
| Answer: |
You should check the site uses encryption
for its shop (shown by a https:// address and a padlock
on the browser window) and that you can contact the company
by non internet means as well. The risks are then
comparable to any mail order shopping.
Many banks offer consumer protection against internet
fraud. This is something you may wish to discuss
with your bank.
